The Road to Equality: a Presentation by the Honorable Madam Justice Claire L’Heureux-Dubé
On April 7th 2016, the Research Chair in Legal Pluralism and Comparative Law had the great pleasure of welcoming the Honourable Madam Justice Claire L’Heureux-Dubé in the context of a discussion on the right to equality.
Passionate as always, Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé had the opportunity to share her profoundly humanist vision of today’s social realities while discussing her contributions to the evolution of equality law in Québec, in Canada and internationally.
Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé was the first woman to be appointed to the Québec Court of Appeal in 1979. She was nominated to the Supreme Court of Canada in 1987 and retired in 2002. Madam justice L’Heureux-Dubé is widely admired for her actions aimed at eliminating social inequality, promoting family law and women’s issues, and raising awareness about minority rights. Her articles, published in renowned law journals, and her conferences on the legal notion of equality which she has given internationally (including in Australia, in multiple Asian countries, in Russia and in South Africa), have enabled her to share her experience and her vision of society with jurists worldwide. Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé has been a Companion of the Order of Canada since 2003 and holds multiple honorary doctorates.
